27th June 2006 - Some great hats

Hello. This week we're going to tell you about some great hats, some special strawberries and an unusual cake, and offer you the chance to win a slap-up feed. Surely it's worth casting an eye over this week's innocent news?

Hat's impressive

Hat's What I Call Magic

Last week we challenged the nation's smoothie drinkers to send us photographs of their unusual headgear. After much deliberation one competitor has emerged head, shoulders and a large bunch of grapes above the rest. Step forward Alexa G, pictured here wearing her fruit-themed hat. She wins a case of our finest drinks and a copy of our new recipe book.

Our runner-up is Mike S, who was nominated by Laura G. He supports an American Football Team called the Green Bay Packers whose fans buy big cheeses at the beginning of each season and wear them on their heads for every game. He's gone for a much less pungent foam imitation cheese, which wins him a case of our drinks, and no doubt the gratitude of his workmates. Congratulations to you both, and thanks to everyone who sent in photos of their hat-tastic creations.

sick of the sight of these? avert your eyes now

We get a kick out of you

Even the most ardent non-football watchers among us are in the grip of World Cup fever now. We're starting to have dreams about things like form, set pieces and the lack of fully fit strikers in the England team. So this week we'd like to find the best player of keepie-uppie in our news family. But instead of a football, we'd like to see you putting your skills into practice using some fruit. Please send photographic evidence of your sporting prowess to allaboutme@innocentdrinks.co.uk and you could receive that all-important call.*

strawberries red, dilly dilly

Strawberry fields for ever

Since our cherries and strawberries summer smoothie is in the shops at the moment, we thought we'd tell you a little bit about our strawberries today. We're quite fussy about the fruit we use, and our strawberries are no exception. We mainly use a variety called Senga Sengana because they're much juicier than most strawberries and have a really intensely fruity taste which complements our cherries perfectly.

  • Strawberries are very good for you because they are rich in Vitamin C and also contain high levels of anthocyanins, antioxidants which help look after your immune system.
  • Senga Sengana are a deep red colour throughout, unlike lots of strawberries which can be a bit pale in the middle.
  • Some of our strawberries are carried by donkeys from the fields where they're picked to the place where they're sorted, which must be nice for them. We reckon the donkeys might get the odd fruity reward too.

cake, rattle, roll (in no particular order)

Hot Cakes

Our Bronte was a little bit bored this weekend, so she took her mixing bowl and knocked up some delicious cakes for us. One of them was a chocolate and raspberry tart. So far, so normal. But that wasn't enough to shake her out of her boredom. So she decided to combine the sweetness of chocolates with the heat of jalapeños, in a creation which we have dubbed Brontë's Chocolate and Jalapeño Cake (clever, eh?)

Here's how it's done:

  • Take nine eggs and separate the yolks from the whites.Whisk the egg yolks with 250g of icing sugar, until the mixture goes creamy.
  • Add a couple of drops of vanilla essence.
  • Melt 250g of dark chocolate (the 70% cocoa solids type) with 250g of butter in a bain marie and leave to cool a bit.
  • Whisk 9 egg whites until stiff. Then, and this is pretty tricky, very carefully fold the butter/chocolate into the egg white mixture (if you're too quick it falls down and goes all squishy).
  • Carefully fold in the yolk and sugar mix.
  • Pour half of the mixture into a baking tin and bake for about 30 minutes at about 160 degrees, gas mark 3.
  • Leave the oven door closed while you bake it or it might collapse (the cake, not the door).
  • Leave to cool while you melt 100g of dark chocolate in a bain marie.
  • Chop between 1-2 jalapeño peppers really, really finely and mix with the warm chocolate, mix this with the remaining chocolate mixture - and then put it in the fridge to cool for at least 4 hours (the top bit will set a bit like a mousse which is gooey).

Do you have any recipes which combine unusual ingredients? If so, we'd love to hear about them. The best one we receive at allaboutme@innocentdrinks.co.uk before next monday wins a posh meal out somewhere worth up to £200.

And if that leaves you feeling a little bit overheated, then perhaps you'd like one of these air-conditioned shirts. Whatever will they think of next?

20th June 2006 - Gong but not forgotten

Hello. There's a fair bit of news to get through this week. You know how it is - some weeks are pretty quiet, but then along comes a week that's louder than a herd of wildebeest stampeding across unbroken savannah. Or something.

Gong but not forgotten

With all due respect, you can keep your BAFTAs and your Brits, because there's only one awards show that matters - the Q Awards. They're the foodie Oscars, they come but once a year, and in 2006, for the fifth year running, we won the Best Soft Drink award, beating stiff competition from all of the big boys with their big budgets. The recipe that got the judges excited was our mangoes, coconuts and lemongrass smoothie, which you may recall was around as a guest recipe in the Spring. Our Nikki invented the recipe, which she likens to a posh holiday in Thailand (in a bottle). So we are taking this opportunity to salute Nikki, salute the award, but shed a small tear or two, because you can't get that recipe in the shops anymore (sob), for it was a fleeting guest.

Words don't come easy

Hard times for the nation's journalists. Seems like good stories are hard to come by right now, so this weekend they resorted to writing a few bits about us. Tom Parker Bowles (Mail on Sunday) said he had "long been a fan" of our drinks, before recommending our summer seasonal recipe. There was also a story in the Times on Saturday about how lots of kids drinks have got rubbish in them, with our smoothies for kids being the exception. Read it here. And last but not least, we're in Caterer and Hotelkeeper as a good example of how to inspire staff "and create a self-motivated, innovative and energetic team" (free biscuits, in case you were wondering).

Mark

The mark of a true man

For those of you who have been following Mark's saga to get his face featured a bit more in our weekly news (hello Mark's mum), here's the next instalment, as promised. Mark in Speedos. Phew what a scorcher.

Bingo madness

You may have read about our summer bingo card last week. Well, it seems like people are rather enjoying it. In fact, a man called Russell likes it so much that he's set up a Flickr photo group to celebrate it. The idea is that if you actually do one of the things as shown on the bingo card, you can post a photo of you doing it onto the Flickr site. If you want to join in, upload your photos here, and if you haven't already done so, download the bingo card here.

Young team

After last week's oldest innocent news reader, this week we have the youngest. This is young William M, 4 weeks old, and he used to kick his mum before he was born whenever she drank mangoes and passion fruits. This photo illustrates how the thrill of being one of life's winners seems to have overwhelmed young William.A notable mention goes to Lesley E, pictured with five generations of her family and our webnews. Grandson Keon, her daughter Rachel, Lesley (holding Keon), her mum Sheila and her mum Ivy. Super.

This week's challenge - as Royal Ascot begins this week, we've decided to stick to tradition and find the best hat. It can be outrageous as you like, but the more innocent it is, the better. Please send in your photos to hello@innocentdrinks.co.uk with "all about me" in the subject box. The winner will receive a case of our finest drinks, our new recipe book and lots of 'oohs' and 'aahs' from the girls at innocent, not to mention doffing of caps from the boys.

14th June 2006 - Mark's hour of glory

Boy it's hot. We don't know what it's like where you are, but round our way it's boiling. Hot enough to grill a sausage on a barbecue.

cherries and strawberries

Sweet and sour

As many of you will have realised, summer is here. So it's only right that we give you a summer recipe to have a swig of. Cherries and strawberries is back by popular demand and, if we may say so, tasting finer than ever. Apparently it's all to do with the fact that we use sour cherries (they're not really that sour) with our sweet strawberries, which gives this recipe a beautifully balanced flavour. Ooh la la. Anyway, we hope you enjoy it.

bingo madness

Two fat ladies

Of course, summer isn't just about fancy smoothie recipes. No way. It's also about bingo. You see, we've designed a summer bingo card that's packed full of stuff for you you to do and see this summer. The idea is that you tick off each picture as you do the activity - when you've ticked off all of the pictures stand up, shout house and reward yourself with an ice cream or two. Download the bingo card here - we hope it helps you have a fine summer.

Young and old alike

Last week we asked you, the innocent family, to get in touch if you know who our oldest reader is. We were fairly flabbergasted by the number of people who got in touch but we think we have a winner. And it's Ernest, 95, who was nominated by his daughter-in-law Janet. He loves our smoothies, partly because he hasn't any teeth so he doesn't have to chew anything.

wisdom in spades

Click here to find out more about Ernest and friends, including Ronald, 94, and Beatrice, 89.

This week we're looking for our youngest reader. To be eligible, we need a picture of said youthful person holding up a copy of this week's news. Fame, fortune, a case of our finest drinks and our recipe book await. Please send entries to allaboutme@innocentdrinks.co.uk and Bob's your uncle, we'll pick a winner. If Bob actually is your uncle, you'll also get a special bonus prize.

mark hard at work

Mark's hour of glory

Thanks for your suggestions re: getting our Mark into the news - sorry we couldn't reply to them all. Over the next 3 weeks we'll get him to do the best 3 suggestions. Some of our favourite suggestions were that Mark should...

- test and review the latest additions to Speedo's swimwear range
- become the next Derek Acorah and lead a paranormal investigation
- start an "Ask Mark" section, where he could give advice on an issue or problem
- do some work with a bag on his head
- pose naked with a strategically placed innocent smoothie bottle

This week's picture shows Mark doing some work with a bag on his head. We'll see if he feels like the Speedos next week.

The other bits

soccer - can't get away from it

  • Here's a nice picture of an innocent World Cup team as made by Olly. Rooney's injury looks pretty bad.14th June is World Blood Donor Day. Giving blood would seem to be a pretty vital thing for all sorts of medical reasons, so go give.

  • There's a fruit quiz on the BBC website. The writer of this week's innocent news scored 3/10. The shame of it. Do the quiz here.
