29th May 2008

Ah, Summer, you tease. We got all excited that you’d arrived the other week and now here we are, sat in our jumpers, watching our drains back up and waiting for the swallows on Springwatch to hatch. Hurry back please.

If you go down to the woods today...

...you’ll probably find some trees. And despite the mixed bag of weather we’ve been having, lots of you have been out and about, rambling in the woods. You’ve uploaded some great tree photos onto our flickr group already and downloaded our innocent tree trail for some bark rubbing action too. We’d love to see what they’re looking like so don’t forget to upload your completed tree trail to our flickr group. And since The Tree Council’s Walk in the Woods runs until the end of May, there’s still time to grab your anorak and crayons and get down to a wood near you this weekend.

Whose breakfast is it anyway?

At our AGM, lots of you asked for more competitions to win free smoothies. So here’s one for you. All you have to do is match the right person to the right breakfast and tell us about the most interesting breakfast you ever had, in under 80 words. The winner will be the person who matches all three breakfasts correctly and writes the best story. We’ll announce the winner (and answers) in next week’s news.

Calling all NGOs

We set up the innocent foundation in 2004 to help build sustainable futures for the world's poorest people. We're supporting 18 projects with 15 partners, mainly in countries where we buy our fruit. And we’d like to help some more people. We’re looking for applications for funding for five subsistence agriculture projects to fund from early 2009. If you are part of a UK based charity with these type of projects in India, Indonesia or Vietnam, or you know of a project that might fit the bill, please have a look at how to apply here.

Summer substitute

Since summer is being a bit flaky this year, here’s a quick fix for the days the sun forgets to shine. Our new summer recipe - mangoes, coconuts and lemongrass - is as summery as a fortnight in Mykonos, without the check-in queues and sunburnt feet. In fact, just one sip will trigger the sensation of flopping into a hammock on a sun-soaked beach, with a good book, no buses and a smattering of palm trees. And it's all readily available in one handy carton. So simply pour yourself a glass, sit back and take an all expenses paid trip to Fantasy Island.

And finally...

14th May 2008 the innocent village fete

Warm outside, isn’t it? Just imagine what it’s going to be like on the first weekend of August. Exactly. We’re going to be having a bit of bash in the park that weekend and we’d love it if you could join us. Read on.

A fete to remember

Remember last August? The 4th and 5th? What were you up to? Were you basking in warm sunshine, supping on fine ale, enjoying some excellent music and betting on nippy ferrets? If so, chances are you were at our village fete. And seeing as last year was such a corker, we’re going to be doing it again this summer in Regent’s Park, London on the 2nd and 3rd of August. There’ll be bunting galore, loads of stuff for the kids, real ale and cider, a big farmers’ market, ferret racing, great unplugged music and even the odd smoothie. We tried to book our Joe’s dad, Alistair, to open the fete this year but he’s off defending his title at the European Town Crier Awards that weekend. Best of luck, Al.

A taste of summer

If the thought of hanging out with ferrets hasn’t got you excited enough, here’s some more stuff to whet your appetite. There’s going to be live music from a host of artists including The James Taylor Quartet, Earl Okin, Imelda May and The Ukulele Orchestra not to mention The Boy Least Likely, Peter & The Wolf, Son Of Dave, James Yuill and many more. Our patented Alfresco Ballroom is back along with the Acoustic Bandstand, a funfair, knitting tent and plenty of welly wanging, Morris dancing and dog agility trials. The list is growing daily so keep checking our website for all things fete.

Getting a ticket

We’d very much like you to come along this year so we wanted you to have first shout at getting tickets, especially since last year's event sold out. It’s £7.50 for adults and £3.50 for kids (plus a £1.50 adult booking fee and £1 kids booking fee). Under 3s can come along for free. There’s only a limited number of tickets though so if you fancy coming along, we recommend you getting them sooner rather than later. Click here to bag yourself a spot.

Find a fete

You can never have too many fetes in life. And not all village fetes have a posh website to tell people about them. So our fete finder is back to help you find your local fete. If you’re organising one, or if you know the details of any being held in your town or village, we’d be really grateful if you could click here and upload them. No car boot sales or badger discos please.

And finally...

some nice bunting

8th May 2008

The sun is out, the parks are free and it’s plain wrong to waste this glorious combination. So this week’s news is slightly shorter to help get you outside even quicker.

Sunshine in a bottle

Pineapples, blueberries and ginger. Sounds odd, works a treat. Tastes like sunshine. Tastes even better in the park. It’s only around for a month. So enjoy it while you can. Preferably in the park.

Cake lady

Gina’s been making cakes since David Beckham started wearing skirts. She made our first birthday cake, our ninth birthday cake and now has her own shop just round the corner from us. Here’s a quick interview with her.

  • The first cake Gina made was an artist’s pallet. Interestingly, her mum Joan (on the right) had one made specially for her 13th birthday. Spooky.
  • Gina’s cake art knows no bounds. Previous cakes include a 1 metre square castle, a roast chicken and lots of posh designer handbags.
  • The 3D fairy cake has been very popular of late.

And if that's not enough cake talk for you, here are the recipes for the vanilla cupcakes and the white chocolate and raspberry ones that we promised you last week.

    And finally...

You might be a bit bored of reading about our AGM by now. So we’ll keep this brief. We said we’d make a video of the day in case you couldn’t come along. So here it is.

Now off you go and enjoy the sunshine.

    And finally...(finally)
